Join the Army of Volunteers

It is a good idea for people, no matter young or old, man or woman, to become volunteers. By being volunteers and taking part in public activities, people can help those who are in difficulties and will learn more about responsibilities as members of the communities. Personally, I think being a volunteer should be encouraged. The reasons are as follows.

Firstly, there are a huge number of activities that need volunteers every year around the world. “August 29, 2005: Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast, destroying lives, leveling homes and leaving thousands of survivors with the same story: We lost everything.”① It is reported that about 1100 people were killed, hundreds of thousands of people had once been evacuated and 80% of the urban area in New Orleans was flooded. ②After the breakout of the disaster, volunteers were urgently needed. And the number of volunteers kept going and finally, more 1.1 million Americans joined the army of volunteers in the reconstruction work. ③These volunteers played a role of vital importance as non-government forces. They helped to distribute food, clean up streets, and look after patients and so on. According to the news released on October, 2004, the Germany World Cup which was held in 2006 recruited at least 15 thousand volunteers. And statistics shows that 561,296 people were enrolled in the Beijing Olympic Games in July, 2008. From the above, we can see that there is always a great demand for volunteers.

Secondly, people by doing voluntary works will have a better idea of responsibilities. Once we join in an organization and become volunteers, we have to follow many principles. We have to go to work on time. We have to keep a smile on our faces instead of sadness no matter what happens personally, because we are supposed to provide service and bring happiness to other people. Image if we volunteers were always unhappy all day long, will people still have expectations from us? And it is obviously that our unfriendliness would only lead to people’s disappointment or even worse. Most of the volunteers are doing trivial things in daily life. For example, if someone is sick, it would be a pleasure for a volunteer to help out. Or we may often see old men with certified cards on guiding pedestrians when they walk across zebra crossings. These small tiny little things win volunteers people’s respect. However, escaping one’s share of work will, I guess, dirty one’s name forever. Because being a volunteer is voluntary, if you don’t like or are not qualified for it, why did you join in? In the process of doing voluntary works, we shall learn to get on well with other voluntary members, work with and learn from each other as a united team too. Only in this way will our volunteer career be more successful. The experience, especially the sense of responsibility of being volunteers will benefit us both in school and in our future development.

All in all, it is a valuable experience for people choosing to be volunteers. And I believe that volunteers are bright stars in the sky that help sailors find the right way home in the darkness. I believe volunteers give people hope, confidence and strength. What are you hesitating for?  Join the army of volunteers right away and let’s be volunteers!
